TEDxHultLondon recently held their Global Contact event in a fantastic location provided by Axonn Media in Wapping. The event focused on how our lives are interconnected on a global scale and had world-class speakers including: Helena Morrisey who founded the 30% Club, a cross-business initiative aimed at achieving 30% women on UK corporate boards by 2015 through voluntary, business-led change. Bill Morrow who has been creating, building, and selling businesses for over 25 years. Founder and CEO of Angels Den, Europe Asias largest Business Angel Investor Network. Solveiga Pakstaite is an industrial designer and a technology specialist. She won the UK national James Dyson award for her smart expiry label, Bump Mark. Steve Core is an inspirational leadership speaker and coach. Working with clients across Europe, America, and Asia. Dr. Ben Voyer who received a PhD in Social Psychology from the LSE, and a doctorate of science in management from the Sorbonne University in Paris. Earnest Hemmingway once said Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime. (Ernest Hemingway: A Literary Reference) War is a gruesome and tragic thing and affects people differently. Both Vonnegut and Hemmingway discus this idea in their novels A Farewell to Arms and Slaughterhouse Five. Both of the novels deal not only with war stories but other genres, be it a science fiction story in Vonnegut’s case or a love story in Hemingway’s. Despite all the similarities there are also very big differences in the depiction of war and the way the two characters cope with their shocking and different experiences. It is the way someone deals with these tragedies that is the true story. It is during these occurrences that Billy first visits Tralfamadore. Tralfamadore is another planet where time is very different, where he could be on Tralfamadore for years, and still be away from Earth for only a microsecond (Vonnegut 32). Billys time travel is both a sanctuary away from the war and a constant reminder of it. Sometimes Billy will time travel to the pleasant bliss of Tralfamadore where he is married to Montana Wildhack, while other times he is forced to keep returning the same moment in time over and over again. This forces him to not only not forget about what he experienced in the war, but relive it. No matter what he does, Billy is not able to put the war in his past. Charles B. Harris believes that Tralfamadore serves to show Vonnegut’s conception of Dresden representing the inevitability of death as a manifestation of the larger enemy of time. By reinventing time, Vonnegut is able to reconcile with the destruction seen in Dresden. (Harris. Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man tells an important story about identity and visibility, by following a nameless narrator who - at the time the story is told - lives in a hole in the ground to avoid society. Throughout the novel, the narrator recounts the events that made him invisible and, in doing so, leads his audience to the conclusion that his invisibility has much less to do with the narrator, and more to do with a society that devalues the black existence. Using first-person narration, Ellison personalizes the events; making it so his audience understands the events in the way that the narrator understands them. By doing this, Ellison offers a personal take on the all too familiar issue of identity that comes with being a black†¦show more content†¦At the end of the paragraph, he notes that when people approach him, they â€Å"see only [his] surroundings, themselves, or figments of their imagination -- indeed, everything except [him]† (Ellison). In the novel Grendel by John Gardner, Grendel is presented to the audience as a coward, he would only attack at night when the guards of the mead hall were asleep, and he was an insensitive character and a monster. Grendel can be proven as a monster for multiple reasons. First and foremost, Grendel lived with his mother in an open cave at the bottom of a boiling lake.
